Vilya – Power Rings

VILYA Power Rings, or advanced rings for power cables, are accessories to be placed on the mains sockets (SCHUKO & IEC) of your power mains cables.

Concept

Vilya is Pann enhanced version of Power-rings we designed for Odeion-Cables.

Your power cables irrigate all your hifi-system. And your earth acts generally both as a common point and a backdoor, very prone to microphonic vibrations.

See Daedale page for more information about piezo-electric effet, which back-pollutes out-of-phase (and incidently in-phase) waves into your system… for these to be amplified. Slow waves (basses) are quickly destructed, and high waves get blurred. You loose impact, focus, deep basses, depth & stero focusing…

Benefits

Placing Vilya power rings offers an immediate effect :

  • the bass takes on even more weight and detail at the same time
  • The midrange and the vocals are truly embodied,
  • well extended by harmonics
  • and a high end that runs with incredible nuances.

We hear

  • the attacks better,
  • the soundstage breathes…
  • The top is loose,
  • the instruments cut out.

The effect ultimately turns out to be striking and instantaneous. Of course, the gain is all the more felt as you go upmarket with power cables.

If you are to get only one Vilya, put it on the IEC (female / electronics) side.

But the other end on the socket side is also very effective.

Design

Basis is obviously a cylinder, with damping and trapping features. As such, it is required to have a “tight fit”. While Power Rings for Odeion were designed for specific plugs, thus knowing exact diameters, these Vilya are universal. As such, they are provided with small leather bands for you to cut if necessary to get this tight fit between the ring & the plug.

Vilya II offers further absorption as it holds in its shape an oval shaped Maskhål III absorber resonator. See Maskhål page for further information.

It is recommended to place Vilya II with Maskhål resonator precisely – when possible – on top of the socket (above the earth socket). Both the curve and the shape of Maskhål horn have been studied at length to increase the absorber/diffuser effect of Vilya power band. The internal components of Maskhål resonator have been designed and chosen so as not to distort the tonal balance and the sound scene, in particular by offering a progressive scaling of the processing of the processed frequencies.

The objective is to let the mains socket “breathe” and “protect” it. First feature requires to restrict the use of metal shaping ; which can be astonishing as most high-end plugs are made of metal alloys. But we tested it, and heard the difference : we must allow the radiation inherent to the mains socket to breathe, because metal over-shielding would force this same flow to remain close to the conductors and slow down their conduction (a reduced soundstage and a muffled high end).

Finally, protect, both by absorption and rebound depending on the frequencies, because the surrounding mechanical and acoustic vibrations penetrate the current by piezoelectric effect. The earth, in particular, acts as a backdoor and quickly contaminates all the signals in the chain by communalization.

A black velvet felt makes it easier to insert the plug and protects its appearance – which is mainly useful for expensive plugs on high-end cables.

Variations

Vilya power rings are provided in two versions

VILYA I

This is simple yet effective a power-band, in the shape of a cylinder.

  • It can fit on any power socket.
  • It can be rotated in any diretion

VILYA II

This advanced version offers a Maskhål resonator on its side, for better signal protection. See Maskhål resonator for more details.

  • Will not fit on any power socket
  • Works better when rotated to place Maskhål above “earth” pin

Etymology

There will be no suspense here. Building a protecting cylinder for your power cable brought us to the shores of JRR Tolkien, and its ring of power. We chose one from the elves, for their being not corrupted by the Shadow’s hand. Well, Vilya is Lady Galadriel’s air-protecting ring… What better ?
